Aclara Substation Communications Equipment

Dave Steidtmann, Product Marketing Manager for Aclara discusses the SCE, or Substation Communications Equipment. This control unit connects upstream to utility software using almost any standard communications technology available, and downstream to meters using the TWACS® technology network signal on the existing power lines. The substation communications equipment prioritizes and transmits outgoing messages from the utility - such as requests for meter-reads, load control commands and status information.

TWACS® technology Capacitor Switching Transponder (CST)

Edward Kobeszka, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Aclara, discusses how the TWACS® technology Capacitor Switching Transponder – the CST – helps utilities save time and money by eliminating the need to send people out to check on capacitor-bank operation – reducing costly on-site maintenance. The CST trims costs by eliminating manual switching and mitigates losses that are caused by reactive power flow. In addition, using the CST for power management can help utilities avoid power-purchase penalties.
